Flying Large Single Line Kites Safely
Firstly, this is not a definitive guide on the subject and you may not agree with some of it. Safety is your responsibility and if you are flying large kites, it is up to you to know what the risks are.
- Do not fly near powerlines, ever!
- Avoid flying near trees. Not only will they suck in your kite but they also create turbulence.
- Get permission or ensure that the area you are flying in, even beaches, has no rules restricting the flying of kites
- Do not fly above 60m or 200ft in the UK without CAA approval or complying with markings requirements.
- Do not fly overhead of people or animals.
- Know the wind range of your kites and do not fly above the recommended windspeed.
- Use the correct flying line for the size of the kite and the conditions.
- Make sure your anchor is way stronger than any flying conditions you are likely to encounter.
- Do not fly during a storm.
- Have an experienced ground crew help you if the kite is big enough to warrant it.
- Check the line and tail is clear before take-off.
